The New and Improved McGuire Family Christmas Letter

Here's a piece I wrote in high-school because I was taking a journalism/communications class and somehow was given my own column in our newsletter where I got to write whatever I wanted. Delightful havoc ensued. Anyway, this piece is a fun throwback that will hopefully get you in the Christmas spirit.

The New and Improved McGuire Family Christmas Letter

A few weeks ago, when I was working on the December newsletter, I happened to come across the rough draft of the letter my mom had written to be sent out to our faraway friends at Christmas time. It was cool and all, containing the polite details of our lives, what Spencer was doing at college, how we spent the summer, etc., but I couldn’t stop myself from imagining how I might improve it. So, I present to you, faithful readers, The New and Improved McGuire Family Christmas Letter:

Hello dear friends!

We hope this finds you well and enjoying a peaceful holiday season. We decided to write another “catch-up” letter this year. We always enjoy hearing news from our friends. We hope you feel the same way! :)

John and I are doing well. I almost killed Emily and myself while driving the other day, because I was looking at someone’s Christmas lights and ran off the road. She laughed at me for roughly five hours. No-one is completely sure what John does with his time, he just sort of floats around the house, and then occasionally floats off to make a pastoral call on the sick.

Spencer is having a grand time at Johnson University in Tennessee, but still comes home occasionally to use up all our allotted internet data and hot water. He denies it, but Emily can totally take him down any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Elizabeth is our favorite child. She is taking some gen-ed college classes right now, and is of course, passing them all with flying colors. Her hair is doing this weird thing where it’s shrinking back into her head, so be sure to ask her about that scientific enigma.

Then there’s Emily. Emily is totally awesome in every way. She keeps us all in fits of laughter 24/7. Her wit is outweighed only by her Christ-like humility and meekness. She’s super cool, and if you aren’t friends with her, you should be. She is a junior in high school this year, but plans to finish early, because, as she says, “I don’t want to do school, I hate math with a burning passion, I would rather die than write out this proof, you don’t need this nonsense to be a Disney Princess, why must I be tortured with it?” Sweet girl. :)

Our wish for you and your family is that this special time of year would draw you closer to Jesus, the whole reason we celebrate!

Love and blessings,

John, Jody, Spencer, Elizabeth and Emily
